Getting your child’s eyes tested is really important. Many children struggle with their eyesight without realising there’s a problem.

They may find it difficult to concentrate in class, struggle with reading, lack coordination in sports or experience tiredness and headaches.

We know parents worry about how their young person will cope in an eye examination, but there’s no need for concern. There are lots of ways we can test a child’s eyesight, adapted to suit their age, ability and concentration levels appropriately.

What is the best age for a first eye test?

Early eye testing is vital for your child’s development. Eye tests at Spectacular Opticians are completely free of charge for all children under 16 funded by the NHS, so there’s no need to worry about the cost of regular check-ups.

• Your child’s first eye test should be around 6 months of age, as this is a critical time for vision.
• Another important period is between ages 2-3 years, when most of your child’s visual cortex develops.
• We also recommend all children have an eye test around age 4½ years before starting school, to ensure they have the best possible start to their education.

Early detection is key. Conditions like lazy eye need to be spotted in these early years for the most effective treatment. Your child’s brain continues developing vision capabilities until about 8½ years old, so making regular check-ups is essential during this period.

What happens at a child’s eye test?

We believe in making eye tests fun and engaging for children.

When your child visits us, they can expect:

• The opportunity to bring along a favourite teddy (we’ll even test teddy’s eyes too!)
• Fun ‘magic tricks’ and games that are actually sophisticated vision tests

Can my child have an eye test if they can’t read?

Absolutely! We have numerous ways to test children’s vision without needing them to read, recognise letters or even speak.

For pre-literate children, we use matching picture cards and ask them to point to what they see. We also conduct objective tests using specialised equipment like a retinoscope, which allows us to accurately assess your child’s eyes without needing any input from them.

How long does a child’s eye test take?

For younger children, an eye examination typically takes just 5-10 minutes.

Our expert approach allows us to gather all the essential information about your child’s eye health and vision in this short time.

For older children, the test may take a little longer as we can include more detailed assessments.

What if my child needs glasses?

If your child needs glasses, our experienced team will guide you through the process with the same friendly, patient approach we use during the eye test.

We understand this can be a big change for both you and your child, and we’ll take time to ensure everyone is comfortable with the next steps.

The good news is that if your child needs glasses, they’ll be entitled to an NHS optical voucher to cover the cost. This voucher can be used towards a wide range of children’s frames and lenses in our practices.
