What happens during your eye examination?

When you visit us for an eye examination, our Optometrists conduct a comprehensive assessment of your eye health. Using specialised equipment, they examine everything from your vision and eye pressure, to the health of your retina and optic nerve.

This thorough approach means we can detect many eye conditions early – often before you’ve even noticed any symptoms yourself. And this early detection is crucial for successful treatment of many common eye conditions.

When might we need to refer you?

While our Optometrists are highly skilled professionals, some conditions require the expertise and equipment available only in hospital eye departments.

Here are some common reasons we might refer you to a specialist:

1 | Suspected sight-threatening conditions

Conditions that could potentially threaten your sight need prompt attention from specialists. These include conditions such as advanced glaucoma and macular degeneration.

2 | Conditions requiring surgery

If you need surgical intervention, we’ll refer you to an Ophthalmologist – a medically qualified eye surgeon. Common surgical procedures include cataract removal and laser eye surgery.

3 | Complex eye diseases

Some eye conditions are particularly complex and require ongoing management by specialists with access to hospital-grade equipment and treatments.

4 | Neurological concerns

Sometimes, symptoms that appear eye-related can actually indicate neurological issues. If we suspect this might be the case, we’ll refer you promptly to the appropriate specialist.

How quickly will I be seen at the hospital?

Not all referrals are treated with the same urgency. Depending on what we find during your examination, your referral might be:

Emergency (same day) – For sight-threatening conditions that need immediate attention.

Urgent (within 2 weeks) – For serious conditions that need prompt attention but aren’t immediately sight-threatening.

Routine (within 6-12 weeks) – For conditions that need specialist attention but can safely wait for a short period.

Your Optometrist will always explain the urgency of your referral and what timeframe you can expect. In the meantime, we’re always on hand to talk to you about any worries or questions you might have.

What happens after a referral?

Once we’ve made a referral, here’s what you can expect:

1. We’ll provide you with detailed information about why we’re referring you and what will happen next
2. We’ll send your referral letter directly to the hospital eye service and keep GP informed
3. You’ll receive an appointment from the hospital (the timing depends on the urgency of your referral)
4. The specialist will assess your condition and decide on the appropriate treatment
5. In many cases, you’ll be discharged back to our care once the specialist treatment is complete

And for many conditions, once the specialist has provided the necessary treatment or determined that your condition is stable, they’ll often refer you back to us for ongoing monitoring.
