Three solutions to glasses-wearers winter woes
Published: 17/10/22 By: Ellie Senior
How can I keep my glasses clear in the rain?
Why do lights glare at night?
How do I stop reflections in my glasses?
How can I protect my glasses from scratches?
Why are my glasses always dirty?
If you are part of the glasses-wearing community, these are common frustrations that you will understand. And many of these issues are intensified by the long nights, artificial lights and cold weather of the winter months.
At Spectacular Opticians we work closely with Zeiss to provide you with lenses that will solve your vision problems, not create them.
How can we help?
Once you have visited your Optometrist for an eye test, our Dispensers will be on hand to help you select the best frame to suit your life and style. But they can also make recommendations to get your lenses working as well as they can for your needs.
“Glasses are the one item that you wear on your face every day, often for two years at least, so why not choose something that will do more than just a basic job and instead will enhance your lifestyle and vision.
The Dispensers in the independent opticians we work with tell us they always feel comfortable they’re giving their customers the best vision possible with a Zeiss lens.”
Heather Hunt, Zeiss Vision Care
As we head into winter, here are three Zeiss lens coatings to consider that will beat those blues…
1) DuraVision Platinum
The good news is that this treatment is included as standard in all Zeiss spectacle lenses and has been developed to answer many of the common complaints you might have experienced. There are four main benefits:
Reduced reflections
The anti-reflective lens coating helps you to see better and look better.
Your vision will be clearer without annoying reflections. This will also reduce the eye strain you might otherwise experience after a long day.
New technology means that this coating is now much better cosmetically too, without the blue hue across the lens that old-school anti-reflective coatings produced.
Durability
An extremely hard coating provides extra durability to your glasses, preventing those scratches that interrupt your vision and affect your attention to detail.
Run around in the woods with the kids, appreciate muddy dog walks or enjoy a blustery coastal weekend all without fear of scratched lenses.
Dirt resistance
Have you noticed that just minutes after you clean them, your lenses have attracted a layer of dust again? Often your lenses will build up static electricity on the surface which draws dust and dirt.
Oily residue and water marks on your lenses also have an irritating effect on the clarity of your vision. A quick dash through the rain, or half an hour cooking in the kitchen, shouldn’t leave you finding it difficult to see.
Duravision lenses stay cleaner for longer in all situations thanks to an anti-static layer that resists dust and dirt and a hydrophobic coating to repel oil and water.
UV Protection
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is there all year round. Even on a cloudy day your eyes are exposed. UV radiation actually has some benefits, including stimulating Vitamin D production, regulating your wake/sleep cycle and improving your mood. But it can be damaging too, harming your long-term eye health.
Every spectacle lens made by Zeiss provides the shield you need, carefully developed to block only the harmful UV rays to the same standard of protection as a pair of premium sunglasses.
2) BlueGuard
Emitted by laptops, smartphones, TVs and any other screen device, blue light cannot be filtered effectively by your eyes. Too much exposure to blue light on a regular basis increases your likelihood of experiencing vision problems.
But blue light has some benefits too. Moderate amounts will make you feel alert, improves your memory and elevates your mood.
BlueGuard is a newly developed lens from Zeiss designed specifically for customers who have high digital device usage.
It filters 40% of blue light, so anything that could increase digital eye strain is filtered, but all the blue light benefits are left completely untouched.
Not technically a coating, the technology is included within the lens which means the bright blue shine that was seen across the surface of earlier light filtering lenses is an issue of the past.
3) DriveSafe
If you are often on the road, you regularly need to drive at night or you have just begun to find the strain of driving difficult on your eyes, DriveSafe could be for you.
DriveSafe lenses are perfect as a purpose pair to keep in the car. Combining special coatings and technologies within the lens, your eyes tire less quickly, increasing your comfort on long journeys.
The DriveSafe coating is specifically designed to reduce glare from oncoming traffic, wet roads and street lamps. Additional technology helps you to focus in low-light levels, optimising your depth of focus so that your eyes work better together.
A varifocal aspect can also be included, making it easy to switch focus from dashboard display to distance vision on the road.
Are Zeiss lenses worth the extra cost?
The short answer is yes.
A new pair of glasses can already feel like a big expense, but in relation to the amount of wear your glasses will see they represent excellent value for money.
Adding a Zeiss lens will give you the comfort of natural vision and enhance your day-to-day view of the world.
Choosing a Zeiss lens at Spectacular can cost from as little as £20 more than our standard lenses. Contact us today to speak to your Dispenser about your needs this winter.
